Limited Signed-Edition Prints

What is a Fine Art Limited Signed-Edition Print?

And the ambiguity starts. There are many definitions for “Limited Edition”. Some artists will limit their editions to a certain number independently of the sizes, others will have limited editions for several sizes.

In my case, I’ve opted for signed editions that are restricted by sizes and number. A certain photograph will be available at different sizes (as stated under the image page) and will be restricted to the number displayed next to the size.

An open edition (without size or number limit) is available through a third-party service. Please note that these open editions are considered reproductions and are not numbered or signed and the printing process is not directed by me. As soon as the limited signed editions for that image are sold, the open edition will be closed and no more prints will be made of that image.

Why order a limited signed-edition print?

There are several reasons. One of them is that the printing process is directed by me. The choice of fine art papers and inks reflects what I have in mind for that image.

These prints are dated, numbered and signed on the back and include a Certificate of Authenticity also dated, numbered and signed.

The signed editions are limited. After the limiting number has been reached, no more signed prints at that size will be sold. Signed editions are also limited at the displayed sizes. No new signed editions of different sizes will be opened.

There is a relationship with the photographer. Owning a signed print provides extra value than a regular un-signed reproduction. All the work done on the print is directed by me.

If you’d like a more affordable option and you’re not concerned about any of the advantages described above, un-signed prints are available through Imagekind.

The pricing structure

As the signed prints get sold, the remaining numbers on the edition increase in value. I’ve chosen a stepwise pricing structure: the edition is divided in 5 steps and the price increases as the next step is reached. As an example, if a print size is limited to 30 signed prints, the steps will be 1-6, 7-12, 13-18, 19-24 and 25-30. Let’s say the starting price is $200 for prints 1-6, each additional “step” of prints will have a higher price.

Fine Art Papers and Inks

The images are printed in Fine Art acid-free high-quality papers such as the Photo Rag 308, Baryta or Pearl by Hahnemühle. The paper type chosen will be matched with the photograph. Prints are made using Epson’s Ultrachrome inks. All signed editions for the same image will be printed in the same paper and using the same type of inks.

If properly cared for (mated and framed, without direct sunlight, etc.) these prints are guaranteed to last over 100 years (more for black and white prints).

Also, in this web site, the images are displayed with a black border. The border is not part of the image and is used only for astethic reasons. Your final print will not have the border.
